As of the 1st of September 2015, the basic grant for higher education has been abolished. This applies to all bachelor and master students starting their degree for the first time the 1st of September 2015. The basic grant has been replaced by a temporary loan. The temporary loan becomes a donation if the student succeeds in completing their degree within ten years, starting from the first month upon receiving study grants. This is also called the ‘performance grant’. To what extent the temporary loan will be converted into a donation, depends on the value of your diploma. If the student does not receive their diploma within ten years, the temporary loan will not be converted into a donation. The consequence is that the student must reimburse the performance grant . A student may receive a performance grant as a student living at home or away from home.
